NAMM 2002 saw the unveiling of the latest Focusrite processor, the Platinum OctoPre. Providing 8 pristine discrete channels of Focusrite Class A mic pre and compression, OctoPre routes directly to any digital audio workstation via eight standard analog outputs, or via a choice of 2 optional 24-bit, 96kHz A/D converters. The new OctoPre offers the unique qualities associated with the Focusrite name at an affordable price.

Feature:
I use xlr inline pads when necessary so I dont mind that there are no pads present. Variable impedance would be great but would probably raise the cost by $2000 :)
Quality:
Has held up nicely for a few years now and I bought it used to begin with.
Value:
I doubt there is anything much better for $100/channel with ADAT out...
Sound:
For $100 per channel the preamps sound quite good to me for general all-purpose recording. Will a $3000 2-channel preamp be better suited to recording an orchestra? Probably. Will a $1500 single-channel tube preamp be better for a lead vocal? Probably. However, these channels sound quite good and I have used them for lead vocals and been impressed with the results. I do not use the compressor function but the limiters are worth their weight in gold for recording to a laptop like I am - prevents the dreaded overs. you dont always have the time you would like to get the levels right :)
Ease of Use:
If you know how to use a preamp there is not much to it.
Overall:
Great value, highly recommended.

Art Tube Mp Microphone Preamp (model 127) Microphone Preamps Art Recording Shipping Cost :$4.99 Feature: everything you need, pad, phantom... except maybe a vu meter would be nice. Quality: after several years of use, the 1/4 inputs will dissconnect ocasionally and the wire has to be "tapped" and the signal goes through again. but its lasted a long time, and still lasts. Value: Im probably going to buy another one when this blows. maybe with the VU meter this time. Desirability: It looks a bit dull...i wish it was more flashy looking...bright purple or something hehe Sound: Ive Used The Dbx 286, a couple different presonus ones, and several mixers, This Pre gives you the best cleanest sound for the price. If it was used In a professional studio...I doubt anyone would Notice It "sounds funny". really a clean and safe bet. there Is a TAD of noise when fully cranked, but really Hardly noticeable unless you tune in. a any simple Gate plugin will fix that. If ur looking for that real sound you hear on CDs, but dont have a busting wallet try this. Support: dont know never needed Overall: Overall Its a great product for the price. If you need a good tube pre for your vocals, Its as good as any out there for 2ice the price. Retail Price :$59 Review this product |

M-audio Audiobuddy Dual Microphone Preamp With Phantom Power And Direct Box Microphone Preamps M audio Recording Shipping Cost :$4.99 Feature: I really wish it had xlr outs w/ground lifts so it could truly be used as a direct box. But it has nice clean gain with mic AND instrument inputs. Quality: Its very well built. My only complaint in this area would be that the 1/4" jacks are board mounted only and not secured to the panel. This could become a problem after heavy use. Value: This product is worth what it usually goes for. Sound: It sounds fine for my application. Im using it as a bass preamp before going into a rack compressor and then into my Alesis Sumo 300. This setup works great. Without it, the Sumos impedance is too low and the amount of gain available would not be sufficient for a good signal. Ease of Use: It is very simple to use. Overall: Ill probably step up the M Audio DMP3 in a few months. Retail Price :$119.95 Review this product |
